How to draw PAPZ

Today we’re visiting Europe! Either a new tangle or an unusual “squared ogee” grid, Papz is another interesting one from Swedish tangler Anita Aspfors Westin.

Papz is Anita’s fourth tangle on the site, including Natti, Lenche and LO’s.

Anita writes,

Papz is made as a celebration to my Dad’s 88th birthday.

I originally made Papz as a painting in the late 90ies. I found the start of it in Sicily. I saw an very very old wallpainting (from an old Greek theater in Taormina) that was in pieces, in black, white and ochre.

It is easy to learn and there are lots of possible variations and embellishments to do.

Anita’s Papz celebrated his 88th birthday on April 19, just a few days before my Mom celebrated hers.

Papz is so easy to do and as Anita points out, there are many possible ways to fill the empty Papz “grid” with embellishments to create variations. My example uses a just couple of them.

I was surprised to see how the crosses I used in the outer columns produced a series of connected double arrows. As is often the case, I found I got the best results by tangling Papz horizontally from the instructions. I seem to have better line control compared to pulling the stroke downwards towards me.

A word about rulers

Many great tangles begin with an underlying inked grid (reticula) and they are always drawn freehand.

"Just as we point out that there's no eraser in a Zentangle Kit, there's also no ruler. ... With a relaxed focus and leaving rulers and preconceived notions aside, expect to be surprised and delighted." ~ Zentangle blog.

I've noticed quite a few "Zentangles" — and even tangle instructions — around the net where a some type of straight edge, stencil or other mechanical aid has been used to draw the underlying grid. Or even (egad!) to draw straight lines (or circles) making up the pattern within a Zentangle.

As CZT Sandy Hunter writes, "there is no zen to be had in the preoccupation with perfection."
