Indy-Rella is one of the Zentangle®-original tangles introduced to CZTs and to her private students by Maria’s daughter Molly Hollibaugh several years ago.
You will be familiar with Molly’s surname, Hollibaugh, as one of Zentangle’s core original tangles named for Molly’s husband who developed the tangle, and featuring our oft-used technique of drawing behind.
Molly has taught Indy-Rella at several CZT training seminars, including the one I attended (CZTVII). As I recall, Indy-Rella came by its name because Molly’s daughter Indy’s favorite toy at the time was Cinderella and thus the name of this fun tangle pattern.
Indy-Rella is so simple, it starts with a dot then you add increasingly larger curved strokes then diminish them in size again. Indy-Rella makes an easy and fun fill pattern and it also looks very effective in white or metallic ink on the original black Zentangle tiles or Zendala tiles. It can be used randomly to fill a section but I’ve also seen tanglers create designs using the Indy-Rella form, for instance placing them in a circular pattern to create a star-like, or mandala appearance. Very versatile.
Introducing Bijou
(August 1, 2014) In the most recent edition of their public newsletter, Rick and Maria announced the addition to the Zentangle family of the wonderful little character, Bijou.
Peek-a-boo, Bijou! I couldn’t help but notice Bijou peeking out of the bottom left corner of this Zentangle tile from October 2010. Obviously not quite ready to come out of his/her shell until now.
You can read all about how Bijou came to join the family here in the newsletter and see the latest addition to the Zentangle product line of small, snail-size Bijou tiles. “Bijou tiles are ideal for mono-tangles and for organizing your tangles and tangleations, or, a quick classic.”
You will also want to check out Bijou’s own section on the Zentangle site, in particular the Bijou-isms you see included in the video below. Without mixing animal kingdom metaphors too badly, Bijou offers many pearls of wisdom about the Zentangle Method. My personal favorite is the illustration of Bijou relaxing (Relax).
In the following whimsical and creative 4-minute video, Bijou demonstrates “in person” how to draw the official tangles Meer (1:00), Zinger (1:34), Indy-Rella (2:10) and Fracas (2:41).
Bijou tiles are 2″ x 2″ (5 cm x 5 cm) of the same great white paper as the original tiles, and they come in their own sweet little tin of approximately 55 tiles for $18. You can read more about them and purchase them here. (They are also available from your local CZT.)
