Before we get started today, I’d like to wish all my Canadian friends and rellies a wonderful and very Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy a beautiful long weekend celebrating your blessings with family and friends and I want you to know I’m very thankful for having you all in my life. Enjoy!
Ona is a tangle pattern from José Meeusen of The Netherlands, and it’s his first on the site.
José’s inspiration was a stitch he saw in an old embroidery book belonging to his Mother. The name Ona “is just an abbreviation of ‘open naad’, the original (Dutch) name of the stitch.”
Here José shares a scan of his inspiration for reference. (At one time in my life I did a lot of sewing and I feel I should know the name of this stitch in English but, alas, I don’t. I guess at last I’ve reached that stage in life where I’ve forgotten more than I know about a lot of things 😉 .)
“My two big passions are folding and drawing. I’ve been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil. One can daily find me behind the table working with paper. I’m the author of 6 origami books and my models have been published in books and magazines all over the world. Twice I won an award in Japan with my origami designs. In the diagrams of my models (drawn by hand) I use hatching to indicate the different colours of a model. That was the forerunner of my passion for Zentangle!“
José illustrates the steps for drawing Ona below and gives two variations to get you started, noting “there are far more variations than the two I’ve drawn.” Fun, easy, pretty!

This is so lovely. I am going to look forward to trying it out.
hey – i think the name you searched is “hemstich”
a nice weekend for you all.
ONA is looking fantastic.
Reminds me of Drawn Thread embroidery on linen – you can check it out at this link: http://www.needlenthread.com/2009/02/drawn-thread-embroidery-diamond-stitch.html
Gorgeous effect, easy to learn and looks so complicated!
Keep the new tangles coming!
Cheers – Rita
The embroidery style is certainly “drawn threads” and there are literally hundreds of patterns that could be easily adapted to ZIA. Depending on how coarse your cloth is, you might need to get stronger spectacles!
Thanks Hannelore, Rita and Faith for the memory aide!
Hannelore, I recall the word “hemstitch,” I wonder if that shows my age?” This is a very pretty pattern and I am anxious to try it. Thank you for sharing a beautiful pattern.
I love Ona and I think the English word you are looking for is ‘drawn threadworm’.
That should have said ‘open threadworm’ I’ve no idea what an ‘open threadworm’ would look like! Probably yucky!!!
The technique is called drawn thread work, but the stitch is hemstitching. Creative tangle.
This one makes me want to learn how to do the stitch!
