How to draw ONA

Zentangle pattern: Ona. Image © Linda Farmer and ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. I hope you enjoy a beautiful long weekend celebrating your blessings with family and friends and I want you to know I’m very thankful for having you all in my life. Enjoy!

Ona is a tangle pattern from José Meeusen of The Netherlands, and it’s his first on the site.

José’s inspiration was a stitch he saw in an old embroidery book belonging to his Mother. The name Onais just an abbreviation of ‘open naad’, the original  (Dutch) name of the stitch.”

Here José shares a scan of his inspiration for reference. (At one time in my life I did a lot of sewing and I feel I should know the name of this stitch in English but, alas, I don’t. I guess at last I’ve reached that stage in life where I’ve forgotten more than I know about a lot of things 😉 .)

The inspiration for Ona

My two big passions are folding and drawing. I’ve been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil. One can daily find me behind the table working with paper. I’m the author of 6 origami books and my models have been published in books and magazines all over the world. Twice I won an award in Japan with my origami designs. In the diagrams of my models (drawn by hand) I use hatching to indicate the different colours of a model. That was the forerunner of my passion for Zentangle!

José illustrates the steps for drawing Ona below and gives two variations to get you started, noting “there are far more variations than the two I’ve drawn.” Fun, easy, pretty!
