How to draw FLOOR TOO

Here in the US we’ll be having similar parades, BBQ parties and fireworks on Thursday. Today I’ll be wearing my red and white, Thursday I’ll add blue!

Today’s interesting and a wee bit challenging tangle, Floor Too, is from Jennifer Carter of North Carolina and it’s her first on the site.

Jennifer’s inspiration and the unusual name comes from her seeing the pattern “on the jacket of a woman who was pressing the buttons in an elevator, hence the name Floor Too.

I’m from Raleigh, NC, though I’m currently living in Henderson, NC. I actually first discovered Zentangle® on Pinterest. I started seeing these beautiful designs and I knew I had to learn. I was able to take a class with Dawn Meisch, CZT before she moved from NC to Texas (her last class actually). I’m still polishing my technique and finding my groove. But I love the beauty of Zentangle and enjoy looking at everyone’s interpretation of it.

The reason I said Floor Too is somewhat challenging, for me at any rate, is the Step 1 orbs. What I found was that if I started with the Step 2 diamond shapes and then drew the orbs around them, I could align and size everything more consistently. Shading makes a big difference in this tangle. (Am I the only one who’s reminded of buttons or sequins stitched onto a background?) As with most tangles, there’s lots of potential to play and I think you’ll have fun with it.

Here are Jennifer’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Floor Too. After the steps Jennifer shows us a few ways to vary her tangle.

Oh neat! I thought it was going to start with a “sine wave” grid. I didn’t see how one would be able to keep the waves consistant nor big enough to fit both the diamonds & orbs. I’l need to peactice the shading.
