How to draw Y-BRAID

Before the last weekend of Summer begins and the first day of Autumn is soon upon us, we have another new tangle to enjoy.

Y-Braid is a sister tangle to Indian CZT Valli Ganti’s V-Braid and makes Valli’s third tangle on the site.

Like V-Braid, Y-Braid was inspired by an intricate leather stamp she came across online:

Valli tells us a little about Y-Braid‘s construction and its name:

This tangle is created using Ys and Cs interlocking themselves, forming a braid-like-look, hence the name!

I thought it’ll look great as a braided tangle similar to Divi.

The ribbon-style Y-Braid shares DNA with Shoshi’s Y-Ful Power grid-based tangle shown here to the right. Shoshi’s tangle carries the weave across as well as down and is constructed in a completely different way.

For me this tangle required a few practice runs and definitely focus to make sure the ends align where they need to. In the end I found it easier to work from the bottom up beginning in Step 1, in case that helps anyone else.

Valli illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Y-Braid below where she features it in a colorful ZIA tile with the Zentangle®-originals Printemps and Hollibaugh with lots of rounding and stroke weighting.
