Oh boy, have we got a fun array of tangles to explore this Easter weekend!! A Baker’s Dozen, in fact. (Easter eggs??)
You may be familiar with German tangler Simone Bischoff’s name not only from her lovely tangles on the site but also from her fabulous tutorial, Sharpen your line drawing skills with six easy lessons. If you haven’t checked that out yet, it’s a must.
Today’s post has been a l-o-o-ong time coming because Simone posted her basic Waben (Honeycomb) tangle 13 years ago – way back in 2012 – just two years after TanglePatterns started in 2010. On the page with Waben (Honeycomb) Simone shows six variations where she changed out the center orb for different shapes. Then the following days after she posted the basic tangle Simone added a dozen tangles she developed using the base hexagonal grid.
When Spanish CZT Tomàs Padrós sent his Tau tangle along, I knew it was way past time for me to tackle this Project-with-a-capital-P — a base tangle with six variations AND a dozen related tangles all at once — because Simone’s hexagonal grid tangles preceded so many others. And as Tomàs points out in his post, the Zentangle community has demonstrated several different ways to construct the underlying grid. So today we have a lot of fun hexagonal grid tangles to add to our repertoire and I no longer have this Project lurking in the back of my mind and wondering how to handle it.
Interestingly, the basic Waben (Honeycomb) tangle from which Simone developed the rest shown below also shares DNA with the tangle we started our week with, CZT Suzanne McNeill’s Board Game. Entirely unintentional/serendipitous on my part to put the two together in the same week.
Naturally, just like any of the grids (aka reticula), the hexagonal grid can produce a myriad of tangles … so put your creativity caps on and I look forward to seeing what you can come up with! And SUBMIT YOUR PATTERN.
Simone illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Waben (Honeycomb) with its six variations where the center orb is changed for other shapes here (or click my example on the right) on her website.
Below are links to the 12 additional tangles Simone developed from the basic Waben (Honeycomb) hexagonal (honeycomb) grid. Tangle names are given in German with [English translations].
