The Zentangle Method™ is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and enjoyable way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.
A Zentangle is a small, unplanned, abstract work of art created one deliberate stroke at a time. Traditionally it is drawn in black ink on a 3.5-inch square paper tile, with pencil shading added afterward for depth and dimension.
At the heart of Zentangle is the process: slowing down, focusing on the next stroke, and allowing the drawing to unfold without planning the finished result.
Many people find that the Zentangle Method promotes relaxation, focus, creativity, and a sense of well-being. The simple act of concentrating on one deliberate stroke at a time can be both calming and rewarding.
Zentangle is a Method, not just a look
Zentangle drawings are made with tangles: structured, non-objective patterns built from simple strokes. A tangle is not a picture of something. It does not represent a flower, leaf, animal, object, scene, or symbol.
This is one of the important distinctions in the Zentangle Method. Many beautiful patterns exist, but a pattern is not always a tangle.
In Zentangle, the emphasis is not on making “art” in the usual sense. It is on the mindful, deliberate process of drawing one stroke at a time.
Because a Zentangle is abstract, there is no need to make it look like anything. This frees us from expectations and allows us to focus on the experience of drawing rather than the outcome.
Anyone can begin
If you can draw a dot, a line, a curve, an S-shape, and an orb, you have everything you need to begin.
The Zentangle Method gently removes many of the decisions that can make art feel intimidating. There is no up or down, no correct orientation, no planned outcome, and no need to know what the finished tile will look like.
One of the most powerful principles of the Zentangle Method is that there are no mistakes. Unexpected lines and unplanned turns often become opportunities for creativity. Rather than trying to erase or correct a stroke, we learn to respond to it and discover where it leads.
You simply begin.
There are no mistakes
One of the most powerful principles of the Zentangle Method is that there are no mistakes.
Unexpected lines and unplanned turns often become opportunities for creativity. Rather than trying to erase or correct a stroke, we learn to respond to it and discover where it leads.
This shift in perspective can be surprisingly liberating. Instead of worrying about getting everything right, we learn to trust the process, adapt, and continue one stroke at a time.
Many Zentangle practitioners find that this simple idea extends beyond drawing and influences how they approach challenges in everyday life.
The traditional Zentangle format
A traditional Zentangle is created on a 3.5-inch square tile. The tile is small enough to complete in a short time, portable enough to take anywhere, and designed to be turned as you work.
The basic process includes:
Gratitude and appreciation
A light pencil border
A pencil string
Tangles drawn in ink
Pencil shading
A moment of appreciation for the finished tile
The pencil string is only a guide. It is not meant to become a heavy outline. As the tangles are drawn, the string usually disappears into the finished work.
Zentangle is not doodling
Zentangle and doodling may sometimes look similar at first glance, but the process is different.
Doodling is often something we do while our attention is elsewhere. Zentangle is done with attention and intention. The focus is on each stroke as it is drawn.
A Zentangle is unplanned, but it is not aimless.
Zentangle-inspired art
Many wonderful artworks are inspired by Zentangle but do not follow the traditional Zentangle format. These are generally called Zentangle-inspired art, or ZIA.
ZIA may include color, recognizable subjects, lettering, larger formats, or decorative compositions. These can be beautiful and creative, but they are not the same as a traditional Zentangle tile.
Who created Zentangle?

Are they only done on a 3 1/2 inch square?
This good question was worthy of a post on the subject. My response is posted here: https://tanglepatterns.com/2010/10/zentangle-format.html, and if you’d like to join in the discussion on this, please do so there!
I used to doodle my whole childhood. Now I enjoy making handmade and hand painted papers and work my doodles into the background of my art work. Thanks for sharing your zentangels.
Hi, can you tell me where I can buy a zentangle kit in the uk please
Hi Wendy, you might check with the two CZTs in the UK (see list here with their emails) to see if they carry the kits. Most CZTs do. Otherwise you can order from the Zentangle website directly (click here) – I’m pretty sure they ship to the UK. You will really enjoy having the kit! Cheers and happy tangling, Linda
where might I find the 102 tangles that are a form of notation ???
thanks
Hi Susan, please see this page for an explanation: Linda’s List of Official Zentangle Patterns.
No deja, you can also do zentangles on canvas (or on anything your imagination leads you to). Try using a marking pen in black or even in colour on one of those canvasses that are wrapped over a frame and don’t need framing. They are available in small sizes. I use 10″ x 10″, my friend uses a slightly larger one. The pen will wear out after one canvas. Good fun though!!
S-T-R-E-T-C-H yourself – you can go in all sorts of directions.
Hi Bertie, a Zentangle is specifically on the 3.5-inch tile. What you are referring to are tangles and Zentangle-inspired art (or crafts), and Zentangle-inspired works can indeed be stretched in all kinds of directions. There are even cars and buildings, and at least one upright piano, that have been tangled.
What kind of preparation do you do to your canvases to get them ready for the pens – I imagine it’s tough to get a precise line on an unprepped canvas?
LOVE Zentangle! I was introduced to it at the AQS Quilt Show in Grand Rapids, MI this past August and have been learning and doing ever since! Tonight I introduced it to 8 of my friends, and they are enthusiastic about it, too! Can’t wait for the CZT in my area to have her class so I learn from an expert!
My sister introduced me to the artistic method and I love it. So relaxing and calming. I need this. I’ve already shared it with three others. I know it will be very popular. Thank you all for sharing.
Just took my first tangle class with fl gourds show. Love it,love it….Been on my mind to do this for a bit, but fell in love with this, can’t wait to get my grandkids started!!!
I LOVE this website I use it almost everyday I get so inspired to draw whatever is in my crazy mind !!!!!:)
This is cool! I teach a Special Needs class and they love doing art…their fine motor skills and concentration are not the best but I’m sure this might spark some of their interest. I’ll have to experiment a little myself before I try it with them!
I love zentangle and i love all your work.
thank you guys for inspiring me because this is one of the pieces of art that i enjoy at my school boggess elementary thank you the fourth graders like myself love it.
I just started Zentangle about two months ago and can’t believe what a change it has made in my ability to relax and unwind. I have tried to learn meditation but can’t seem to empty my mind, but when concentrating on my Zentangles, I find that I am not thinking about other things. It has opened a window to discovering my ability to create interesting Tangles while also allowing me to concentrate only on what is in front of me rather than all the things I stuffed into my mind throughout the day. I feel that discovering Zentangle has provided me with a gift I have not been able to achieve prior to this discovery. Thank you from my heart and mind.
Love your tangles and read and draw them all the time. Thank you.
Welcome to TanglePatterns and Zentangle®, Janet. Delighted you are enjoying the site!
