How to draw NONINÁ

Zentangle pattern: Nonina. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Hi there, lovely to see you again!

Our sweet tangle of the day, Noniná, is from Spanish CZT Aida Rico and it’s her seventh on the site. Most recently we explored her Spa tangle.

Aida tells us about the inspiration for her tangle and how she named it:

This is a tangle inspired in a window that I saw in one of my visits to Córdoba (the same city that inspired my Qurtuba) tangle.

Looking for a name, I remembered a local expression: “ ¡No, ni ná!”, that literally means “Not, neither, nothing!!”, but it really is used to say Yes!

Can you believe it? The Andalusian people use three negative expressions to say yes!!! It’s funny, isn’t it?

I found it best for me to tangle Noniná by turning my tile for Step 3 and 4 so that my hand was in the same position and creating the identical shape each round. (This is actually a good habit with most tangles.) That helped keep the size mostly the same which makes a big difference when you begin connecting them in Steps 5 and 6.

Aida illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Noniná below and she features it in a colorful ZIA tile where single connecting strokes were used in Steps 5 and 6, and in an eye-dazzling Zendala that includes the Zentangle®-original Knightsbridge and a center full of orbs.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
