Hello there, so good to see you again!
Australian CZT Lianne Woods shares her Cheeky tangle with us today. This is a cool grid-based tangle to explore, it has endless fill possibilities and Lianne shares several to get us rolling.
Cheeky is Lianne’s seventh tangle on the site, most recently we explored her fun Squianne.
Lianne shares her inspiration and describes how she goes about deconstructing a tangle as well as her method of coming up with a name:
Over the last few years rattan was the latest trend in home decorating. I had seen many images of rattan furniture in stores and online. Looking through a catalogue my eye was caught by an image as an unusual pattern for rattan which I had not seen before. I took a photo and filed it away in a folder of possible patterns to deconstruct.
When I found some free time earlier this year, due to frequent rainy days, I pulled out the photo to deconstruct the pattern.
In deconstructing patterns, I look for:
- What type of pattern is it? – geometric, grid
- How many of the five basic elements I can see?
- What shapes can be seen? – squares, diamonds, triangle, x
- Are there any enhancements used? – aura, rounding
Then it’s trial and error until I come up with the easiest steps to deconstruction.
In naming the tangle I began by writing down words to describe the tangle – rattan, wicker, square, check, holes, diamond, weave, lace, lacey, cane.
Next comes the thesaurus and looking up other words with the same meaning.
When looking up the word ‘check’, I accidentally typed in the word ‘cheek’. From there I decided to be cheeky and call it cheeky.
If you’re like me and your pencil fills/shading sometimes strays where you don’t want it after smoothing with the tortillion, I find Tombow’s Mono Zero Eraser a total winner. It has a very small tip for precise clean ups.
Lianne illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Cheeky below where she also features it in two colorful ZIAs. As you can see in her 3Z tile (and in some of the tangleations below), varying the width of the spaces between the parallel strokes in Step 1 is another interesting way to create variations.
Here Lianne demonstrates some Cheeky tangleations to explore. For my example of Cheeky I (sort of) used the top left version.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.

What fun and love the name. Yes a bit of sass to go with some tangling with all the variations.
Lianne, I love all the variations you show here! I also love the purposely lazy lines. 🙂 And the name, of course … lol …
