How to draw BOTTLE BRUSH

Hello my tangling friends, welcome back!

You might haven noticed that the first day of Spring this year is tomorrow, March 19th. I usually think of March 21st as the first day of Spring, but in reality it changes between the 19th, 20th and 21st depending on the exact moment the sun crosses the celestial equator, the vernal equinox.

In 2024, the March equinox happens on March 19 at 11:06 P.M. EDT. This falls on a Tuesday and is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere.

If you thought that the spring equinox only ever occurred on March 21, you may be dating yourself. The civil calendar date of the equinox continues to shift every year.

Today’s delightful Spring-like Bottle Brush tangle is the first on the site from Australian CZT Heidi Froelich.

Heidi explains how she came up with her tangle,

I was drawing one morning and threw together something that reminded me of a native tree here in Australia called, colloquially, a Bottle Brush. They are beautiful native trees and great for birdlife and I have a few in my garden.

I had a go at deconstructing what I’d drawn and came up with a pattern.

Bottle Brush shares DNA with the Zentangle®-original Ahh, and also with Lori Howe’s Snowzags from many moons ago but it’s just a little different and super easy enough to be included in our tangle resource.

For my example I decided to see how Bottle Brush looks as a filler and I think it works quite well. I was very tempted to add a Sakura White Gelly Roll dot in the centers but instead went for a teeny touch of shading.
