How to draw BATBONE

Yesterday this greeting and philosophical wisdom arrived in my inbox in the form of my New York Times Cooking newsletter and I thought, “what a wonderful message” … so I thought I’d share a snippet.

“Good morning. How are you doing? I’m compelled to ask. These are not easy days we’re marking. There’s something about the act of putting together a dough or a batter, about measuring and kneading and waiting on a rise, that allows you to get out of your head, and to labor simply in the service of deliciousness.” Sam Sifton, NYT Cooking newsletter – October 22, 2023

I think the same could be said of the Zentangle Method™, paraphrasing Mr. Sifton:

There’s something about the act of putting your pencil string on a Zentangle® tile, about mindfully making strokes with your Micron as you tangle, about shading and blending and “adding love”, that allows you to get out of your head, and to draw simply in the service of a creative act.

Patterns and connections … Here’s a bold and super easy Monday tangle and I thought it could be a fun one for you for the Hallowe’en season soon upon us too.

Batbone is from California tangler Kim Cyr and it’s her second on the site. Quite a long time ago we explored Kim’s Cornman tangle.

For my example of Batbone, when I finished I thought it need a little something so I added an aura to the scallop shapes, probably would look better if I’d done that on a larger scale. But there we have it 🙂

Wonky grids, ZIA color and different fills might also be fun creative options to explore.

Kim illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Batbone below and she demonstrates it in a simple monotangle Zentangle tile.
