Hello my tangling friends!
We’re continuing with our getting-ready-for Valentine’s Day theme and today we’re exploring Taiwan CZT Mina Hsiao’s 0909Eiffel from the City of Love.
Mina sent this tangle some time ago and I was reminded of it recently when Canadian tangler Cyndi Knapp began to send her Valentine-inspired tangles and included this note,
This past Spring, I had the opportunity to travel to Paris for several days. So I did what every tourist does – visit the Eiffel Tower. A magnificent structure that I’d climbed 50 years prior. … On closer examination of the Eiffel Tower, I found inspiration for this pattern in the detail of its archways.
Cyndi’s submission was for the identical detail Mina had observed. More about Cyndi’s submission in a minute, first let’s see what Mina had to say. Back then Mina wrote,
I traveled to Paris with my friends one September and got a lot of experiences.
We started the trip in Paris from “Point Zéro Des Routes De France” and I visited “La tour Eiffel” on 09/09.
My inspiration of new pattern comes from “La tour Eiffel”.

Mina illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing 0909Eiffel below and she demonstrates it in a minimalist monotangle. As you can see, mirroring and rotating the fragment creates different patterns.

As explained above, Cyndi Knapp had the identical inspiration but since Mina’s came first chronologically we’re using the name 0909Eiffel and saving Cyndi’s name for another of her tangles coming along in the near future. Cyndi has graciously given me permission to include her submission with this post.
Along with her notes Cyndi sent this gorgeous greeting card which includes “Afterglo, Bubbles (v), Heartique, Heartgramp and Hearts Divided (but not divided)”.
It’s a simple ribbon pattern that’s easy to tangle as well as transfer into a grid.
Being airy, I found variations and embellishments are limited but it’s fun to play with the direction, placement and size of the secondary scrolls in Step 3.
Cyndi approached her deconstruction in a little different sequence and she includes a lovely ZIA that also features the Zentangle®-originals Paradox and Striping along with CZT Sharon Caforio’s sweet Luv-A.
