How to draw HALUTA

Greetings and welcome back!

Today’s lovely Haluta tangle is from Japanese CZT Kazumi Ikegami and it’s her first on the site.

Kazumi’s Haluta takes a loose, airy version of sacred geometry’s classic Flower of Life and adds a bold element connecting the rice-shapes together that gives a totally different and beautiful look to it. Haluta shares DNA with the Zentangle®-originals Quandary and Fife.

I met Zentangle two years ago and became a CZT in September 2022.

I live in Nagano, Japan. Nagano is one of the coldest places in Japan.

In Nagano, there is a big temple called Zenkoji. I often go there with my family and in summer we can see many turtles in the temple’s lotus pond. Now it is winter, and they are hibernating. I am sure they are looking forward to spring. This tangle is inspired by the turtles waiting for the blooming spring.

The name of the tangle, Haluta, comes from my children’s names, Halu and Uta.

And in Japanese, “haru” means spring and “uta” means song.

In doing a little research on Nagano, I was reminded by Wikipedia:

The city of Nagano and several surrounding communities hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics and the 1998 Winter Paralympics.

Nagano City is an important historical location, an industrial center, as well as a travel destination and a center for accessing surrounding sightseeing spots, including Japan’s onsen-bathing snow monkeys in Yamanouchi and world-class ski resorts of Hakuba, Shiga Kogen and Nozawaonsen – throughout the year.

Looks like a bucket-list destination!

As for our Friday tangle … for our example I’ve used a portion of Kazumi’s beautiful Zentangle below. In my own explorations I found that it helped me to use a dot grid to determine where I wanted the middle of the rice shapes in Step 2 to go. (I have issues with proportions.) FWIW.

Kazumi illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Haluta below and she includes a lovely Zentangle tile featuring her tangle, “the tangles I used are Narfello, Shattuck, Tipple, ‘Nzeppel and Haluta.”
