How to draw JAN

Zentangle pattern: Jan. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Hello again friends, so nice to see you!

Today’s the final session of zenAgain 2022. It’s been wonderful spending time with about 350 of my CZT colleagues and a fun and interesting learning experience I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Again my gratitude to Zentangle HQ for inviting me to attend online to delve more deeply into Zentomologyand learn six new tangles in the process (Wyfore, Mythograph, Foundabout, Rambles, Mysealiam and Pouyang).

All CZTs have now received the new tangles by their newsletter and my guess is we’ll see some if not all of these introduced to you during Project Pack 19, Twelve Days of Zentangle beginning December 9th. As always you’ll all see them right here on TanglePatterns as soon as they’re published by ZHQ. CZTs are free to teach the tangles but are asked not to publish the steps until ZHQ has done so.

So now I quickly change my focus to help Robert prep for the arrival of Nicole, currently a tropical storm but expected to be a hurricane when it reaches our shores. We’re already having gusty winds and rain showers this morning. The size of this storm is massive as you can see from this NOAA satellite photo.

This GOES-East GoeColor satellite image taken at 2:36 p.m. EST on Nov. 8, 2022, and provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows Tropical Storm Nicole approaching the northwestern Bahamas and Florida’s Atlantic coastline.

Nicole is on track to come ashore pretty much right where we are on the East coast of Florida very early tomorrow (Thursday) morning. Fortunately it is nowhere near the strength of Hurricane Ian, but a hurricane of any size isn’t to be ignored and so our first job is bringing inside anything that could become a projectile and closing our hurricane shutters. Then hunker down, say our prayers, tangle, and wait for it to pass. Always an adventure, this old life!

Today’s Jan tangle is from Spanish CZT Belén Román and it’s her first on the site.

Belén introduces herself and explains the touching background for her tangle:

I’m a nurse and I love my job. I am also a philologist and speech therapist and since I was little I remember drawing and writing poetry.

I think that the seed of Zentangle has always been present in my life but in an unstructured way and without any defined objective. That’s why when I discovered the Zentangle Method™, with its theoretical paradigm and its meditative intention, with its simple bases that at the same time allow an explosion of creativity and beauty without limits…. I definitely fell in love.

Zentangle helps us relax, increases concentration and self-esteem, allows us to identify with others and create community from empathy and creative solidarity and at the same time makes us feel unique in our wonderful imperfection.

The tangle Jan has its origin in the memory of the son of some friends who died a month after being born. Jan is a star baby and these lines that look like silhouettes of strollers towards infinity are in his honor.

Jan is a source of inspiration for me because sometimes society pays little attention to perinatal mourning and it is not talked about or that pain is hidden as if it were a taboo subject.

The fleeting passage through the Land of the baby stars teaches us a lot, fundamentally about the transforming power of love, and the most vivid example of this is their parents.

Jan is based on a dot grid. It always fascinates me how many different patterns come from such a simple construct and the strokes that connect them.

Belén illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Jan below where she demonstrates it in a monotangle featuring two simple ways to vary and shade it.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Hope you and your hubby stay safe!!

  • Carmen Menchón

Dear Belen, I feel so identified with your words about the zentangle seed and how, when I learned about the method, things that had been there all my life fell into place.
I also admire your absence of fear to deal with those taboo subjects, such as the death of a baby, and the power of love as a source of overcoming.
I’m definitely going to try your tangle Jan

  • Ohhhh such a very sad circumstance leading to the name of this tangle!
I’m sending thoughts of sorrow and solace to the parents who lost their baby …

Is the first letter pronounced like the j in judge or the y in young?

  • Jody Genovese

I love hearing the stories behind how patterns are named. Though this is sad, it is a sweet way to honor the baby and the family. Thank you for sharing.

Linda be safe. Will be thinking of you and sending prayers.

  • Deanna J. Rankin

A very simple tangle, it carries such a powerful message! I hope it brings peace to this family.
Please be safe Linda, my prayers are with you! Thanks again for this wonderful website!

  • Fun tangle with a sad story. Stay safe Linda with this storm. And yes Zen Again was a fun experience. I did it online as well.
