How to draw FLAPJACK

And here we go with a new month and another week of inspirational tangles.

Flapjack is from Maryland CZT Angie Gittles, she’s been on a run deconstructing tangles from her sketchbook. Recently we explored her Yolo tangle.

Angie knows I have a fondness for grid tangles — just 2 or 3 simple lines repeated methodically with endless variations — and she writes,

Yay…another grid! No real story behind this one other than the day I stepped it out was National Flapjack Day. Yum!

You can turn the fragment various ways to create different patterns.

The curved strokes of Flapjack create interesting foundations for a variety of patterns when you flip and/or mirror the fragment. Overall Flapjack presents a canvas for different ways to shade as well as many embellishment opportunities.

Angie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Flapjack below where she includes it in a duotangle tile with the Zentangle®-original Knightsbridge.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. I love a grid tangle, too, and this one looks like fun!

  • Linda Dochter, CZT

I never considered that construct for an ogee grid before now. Now I can’t see any grid except an ogee on your sample tile. Thanks for the magic trick, Angie.

  • Amanda

Love this, so simple but looks so effective, thank you.

  • Robert Funk

Nice and simple, On larger tile this would work also as a very nice string. I typically use 8in.X 6in. tiles I make my self.

I recently learned about Zentangle. I find this pattern so interesting and entertaining! How you can take a simple pattern and rotate it to express such profound beauty! It is wonderful. Thank you!
