Hi there friends and welcome to another week of fun and inspirational tangles.
As always, I’m delighted to have your company …
The fun and whimsical Riggle is from Welsh CZT Alan Quincey and it’s his first on the site.
Alan’s daughter Joanna Quincey, also a CZT, introduces her father and his tangle,
My father, Alan Quincey became a CZT after joining the first online Seminar CZT36 in November 2020 at the age of 90! We are pretty certain that he is the oldest person to have done so!
He is a very active tangler and draws almost everyday. He was a world class calligrapher and had been a graphic designer for most of his working career.
He actually came across Zentangle® before me, after he found a letter, in November 2016, from a pen-friend from the USA with whom he had lost touch in 2012.
The writer said….”Take a look at this wonderful drawing technique that Rick and I have started, called Zentangle.” His long lost pen friend was Maria Thomas, creator of Zentangle. That is when everything changed!
When he had first received the letter in 2012 he did not have access to the internet so had not looked up Zentangle but upon re-reading he popped onto his tablet and was astounded by what he discovered. He sent Maria an email asking if she remembered him as they had met at a Calligraphy workshop some 30 years previously! She replied immediately and was overjoyed to hear from him. They have been in very regular contact ever since with Maria and Rick visiting in March 2018.
Alan lives independently in mid Wales UK and creates art and Zentangle daily.
Alan’s lovely ZIA tile includes Riggle and the Zentangle-originals Drupe (for guidance, see Fracas) and Diva Dance.
Alan illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Riggle below where he describes his sweet tangle and includes examples of ways to grow and embellish it.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Riggle will be fun to use – It has its own personality! I hope you’ll have more patterns for us!
What a lovely story.
Congratulations to 90 year old Alan Quincey.
What a wonderful story and beautiful tangle!
super tangle and super duper “story.”
Fun, cheerful and alive! Nice handwriting, by the way.
Love your new tangle Alan. Thank you.
Oh, I love this tangle! It looks like whimsical little fantasy creatures (at least, in my tiny world it does when I combine it with Mooka and then draw tiny gnomes to populate the foreground 🙂 ). A delightful pattern to work with!
What a great story. I’m so glad Alan reconnected with Maria, and that he explored Zentangle and became a CZT. Great tangle.
What a beautifully organic tangle!!! I’m tremendously inspired by the fact that Alan continues to design such lovely artwork at his age! I got back into drawing 5 years ago at 60. So I enjoy seeing the creative influence of mature artists! Thank you for sharing!!!
Nice pattern and inspiring story. Thanks for sharing

What a happy tangle, how can you not smile while doing this one? (It makes me think space aliens) Thank you!
I tried your tangle and really like it. Thank you for sharing.
interesting
What a wonderful story! It truly is a small world, isn’t it? You can tell Alan is a calligrapher; even his everyday handwriting is beautiful.
