Today’s fun and easy tangle is one I found on a recent trip through my archives.
Es-Sizz is from Wisconsin CZT Susan Reading and it’s her first on the site.
Susan explains how she came up with her tangle and the (yummy) reason for its name,
When I returned from Providence with those wonderful letters – CZT! – officially after my name, I still hadn’t decided on a way to sign my artwork that I liked. So as I was trying out different configurations with my initials, I started drawing a backward “S” and began practicing; running them across the page in rows. turning them left and right, and alternating the “sets of 3”. I began to see a pattern forming, and after adding some diagonal lines and dots I thought it looked like……….BACON!?!
So, that’s how I came up with the name. “ES” for the letter I was working with, and “SIZZ” for the bacon, of course! It’s really pretty simple, but I find it very relaxing when I get into a rhythm of drawing those backward S’s. The pattern seems to add motion and also an interesting texture to your drawings. I’m sure there are many more ways to fill the spaces than the ones I shared here.
I hope you have fun with ES-SIZZ and don’t forget that even though it looks like bacon, it’s absolutely calorie free!
Es-Sizz shares DNA with the Zentangle®-original Keeko and it does provide excellent practice at drawing those “backwards” S’s. You really do get into an easy rhythm with them. In her notes Susan gives us a great tip for laying out the spacing so you end up with a consistent grid.
Susan illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Es-Sizz below and she includes tips and lots of suggestions for fill variations for us to play with.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
