Today’s Tiwa tangle is from Belgian CZT Ria Matheussen who’s always on the lookout for inspirational patterns to deconstruct so we can draw them as a tangle.
As a result, we now have 30 of Ria’s tangles on the site!
She writes,
Our bathroom needs an upgrade and while looking for new tiles I was inspired by the pattern on this ceramic wall tile.
It is so simple and Wati didn’t sound good for me, so I chose Tiwa.
I started with the little “squares”, connect them with a straight line and finished with a frame. You can also start with the frame and then draw the squares and the connection line inside. The final result is the same.
As you can see the lines of the squares are a little curved. I like that more than straight lines.
By dividing the squares or by filling them with tiny strokes you get different results… This tangle gives many options: you can use it as a border, straight or in the round or you can use it as a filler by repeating the border, regular (example 2) or irregular (example 1 and my fave).
There are only 3 steps but the tangle needs shadowing for more depth. By adding strokes, filling spaces with pen or pencil… you can achieve many different results.
As there is “no up or down” in Zentangle®, I’ve rotated my Tiwa example and played with alternating fills in the diamond shapes. I found that drawing the “grid” rows first (Step 3) and then adding the diamond shapes was easier for me to get the spacing I wanted.
Ria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Tiwa below where she includes some ways to use it as ribbon-style tangle, in the round and also as a grid-type of filler tangle. Ria notes, “On my tan tile I have used also Fassett, Garlic Cloves and Fescu. A tiny bit of coloring, a lot of shadow and white charcoal/white gel pen are used for more contrasts.”
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

I love it!
Wish you fun while drawing and thank you very much for your nice comment!
So simple, just what I needed today. Thanks Ria for sharing.
Indeed, very simple but versatile and I wish you fun while exploring. Thank you very much for your comment.
Ria, this one is brilliant in its simply and adaptability . Can’t wait to try it out:)
What a wonderful compliment, thank you so much and wish you fun while give this one a try!
I really like your elegant tangle. I am sure to be using it. Thank you
Thank you very much for your nice feedback and I hope you will enjoy drawing Tiwa.
Tiwa is the native language of some of the indigenous central Rio Grande Pueblos of New Mexico. So I will always have a fondness for this tangle. It is so simple, yet so striking. Just like the native designs on rugs and pottery. Thank you,Ria! I looked to see if the creator of Tiwa was one of our New Mexico CZTs, and lo and behold, Tiwa comes to us all the way from Germany! Small world made smaller by Zentangle!
I didn’t know that TIWA is also the name of a native language, still spoken by some people in New Mexico. It is wonderful to know and I’m very glad you wrote that because I like many native designs. So thank you very much for telling and of course for your kind comment. I hope you will enjoy and will have fun with Tiwa!( it comes even further than Germany, I live in Belgium but just one hour from Germany)
Simply elegant! Thanks Ria and Linda!
Thank you very much Jennifer for giving such a nice compliment!
