How to draw FERNE

Hi all, great to see you once again and share our last fun tangle for the month of July.

The sweet grid-based Ferne is from Canadian tangler Cyndi Knapp and it’s her 2-dozenth 😉 on the site along with a couple of excellent tutorials.

Cyndi writes,

The inspiration for this grid based pattern came when going through a box of my old handmade card prototypes. One card and the much loved rubber art stamp used to make it quickly got me thinking about creating a new Zentangle pattern.

After tangling the ZIA, the leaf-like detail resembled a stylized fern frond to me. Since my Mom’s name was “Ferne” and I know she would have liked this pattern, I named it in memory of her.

It’s pretty easy to tangle and is quite versatile. The larger it’s tangled, the more possibilities for detail and variation.

As you see from Cyndi’s examples, Ferne also does very well as a focal point in a tile and as she explains you also have more real estate to explore embellishments. (And room for decorating those little circles connecting each grid square!)

Cyndi illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ferne below and she features it in a lovely tile with the Zentangle-originals Printemps, SeZ and Tipple as well as Karry Heun’s Sand Swirl and CZT Diane Lachance’s Curly•Q.
