Hi everyone, hope your week is going swimmingly!
Aunt Flower is another tangle from the archives and it was submitted by Taiwan CZT Damy Teng on behalf of her niece, Carolyn.
At the time of this submission Carolyn was 10 years old so if my math is correct, Carolyn is now a “senior” teenager and probably a college student!
I’ve always been pretty careful about whether certain “flower” patterns qualify as tangles, mindful of this from The Book of Zentangle:
“Keep it Non-representational. Zentangle artwork is intended to be non-representational. Zentangle’s elemental strokes are also non-representational. We don’t teach complex elements such as hearts, stars or flowers. Tangles are also non-representational.”
It expands on this from early days of the Zentangle blog:
“This allows you to get into Zentangle’s process without trying to draw something rather than being ‘something to draw’.”
“Drawn as a tangle” means that you repeat a series of elemental strokes in a certain structured way so you inevitably end up with a particular pattern without needing to know what the pattern you are creating is supposed to look like.
On revisiting Aunt Flower, I feel it meets the criteria so today we’re going with it!
Damy introduces sweet Carolyn and her tangle,
Carolyn is my younger brother’s daughter.
Carolyn likes to do anything together with her Aunt Damy. Watching TV together, eating together, tangling together … As long as we’re together, she’s very happy !
Once she taught me to draw this pattern, so it’s named Aunt Flower.
Simply filling different sections in various ways with ink and shading gives more fun and interesting ways to explore Aunt Flower. In Damy’s lovely duotangle tile above with the Zentangle-original ‘Nzeppel she uses beautiful stippling to add shading and interesting texture.
I’m not sure whether Damy or Carolyn illustrated the step-by-step instructions for drawing Aunt Flower but here they are below. In addition to being a sweet mandala-like focal point that can grow outward as far as you want, it makes a good string for showcasing other tangles and has lots of possibilities as a colorful ZIA.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Fun one. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Carolyn,
I love the way you made your flower drawing with the dots for shading. It looks wonderful. Keep drawing. I look forward to seeing more of your work,
BJ
As described in the post, the lovely tile you’re admiring was done by Carolyn’s Aunt Damy and I’m sure she’ll appreciate your compliments too.
Hi Damy, Carolyn’s Aunt.
I apologize for leaving you out of the comment for Carolyn. She is goind great following along with you, when you are tangling. It ia lovely that she enjoys working along side of you. A great teacher for her, as your work is wonderful. Enjoy all that you are doing, as it seems Carolyn is loving what you do.
Take care,
BJ
