How to draw DEBEER

Our tangle of the day is DeBeer by UK tangler Jacqui Bull and it’s her second on the site. Jacqui previously shared her Tweak tangle with us.

Jacqui explains how she “discovered” her tangle,

I didn’t consciously set out to create a new tangle, it just appeared on the flower tile I was tangling (top example). I enjoy the botanicals and particularly like the detailed backgrounds, so something more open was needed in contrast.

It’s very easy to tangle and the curvy lines are so pleasing to draw. Depending on how you use it, you could add more details to the open areas, perhaps lines or hatching, and the ends could be coloured in as I’ve done on a couple of the examples. It works well as a border too, and can be drawn at any length, just remember to draw the final two in a “Y” shape.

The tangle appeared quickly and easily, but the name was something else! As the original tile was tangled on a significant anniversary of my late Mum, I thought it would be nice to name it after her, but nothing seemed quite right. The ends of the tangle reminded me of earwig pincers, but you can’t really call a tangle “earwig”! A bit of research informed me that a gentleman called Charles De Beer discovered the earwig and the name “DeBeer” seemed just right. Not exactly in honour of my Mum as she absolutely hated earwigs but I know she would have loved my version and laughed at the way I got to it.

Jacqui notes that DeBeer shares DNA with Dragonair but is just slightly different both in appearance and in construction.

Jacqui illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing DeBeer below. Jacqui also shares a beautiful ZIA tile, a bookmark and two Bijou tiles featuring her lovely tangle. “On the flower tile – Floo, Rixty and tangleations of Flux and Ginili. On the two Bijou tiles – Knightsbridge, Flux and Springkle.

  • Jacqui, that is a superb colored tile on your step-out page! I’m always on the look-out for a tangle that could be vegetation, and you’ve made me see Rixty as a possibility too.

What a great story behind the name and I am sure your mum would be laughing indeed!

Thank you for the wonderful tangle which I have been enjoying today on some Bijou tiles 🙂 Fantastic examples!

  • Jody Genovese

Dear Jacqui you know how much I adore your work. This is an exceptional display of your talent. Keep them coming my friend. Wow!
As usual your wit comes through with your story, sort of at the expense of your mum, but I’m sure she would appreciate it. See you soon!
