How to draw JACKSTRIPES

Jackstripes is UK CZT Chrissie Frampton’s tenth tangle on the site.

The internal triangle shapes in Jackstripes offer all kinds of opportunities for shading and variations.

Chrissie writes,

I was inspired to deconstruct this pattern from this small clutch bag on the internet.

It reminded me of the British flag commonly known as the Union Jack.

I thought it would be a good idea to call it Jackstripes after the British flag and its name Union Jack, and Stripes from the Stars and Stripes of the American Flag.

Jackstripes is easy to tangle and using the concepts of rotating, mirroring and/or flipping a fragment opens up all kinds of interesting possibilities. As I mentioned above, the triangle shapes that are formed create further variations with a whole range of Tripoli-like fills.

Chrissie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Jackstripes below and she features it in three different Zentangle® tiles with interesting variations.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
