How to draw RA-ON

Zentangle pattern: Ra-On. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. Today we have a fun and easy tangle whose name Ra-On literally means happy or joyful in Korean.

Ra-On is shared with us by South Korean CZT JooHee Shim and it’s her first on the site. JooHee is one of 21 very dedicated and enthusiastic Certified Zentangle Teachers in South Korea.

JooHee is from Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, a province that sits along the southern border of North Korea. According to Wikipedia,

Gyeonggi-do is the most populous province in South Korea. Its name, Gyeonggi means “the area surrounding the capital”. Thus Gyeonggi-do can be translated as “province surrounding Seoul”.

The provincial capital is Suwon. Seoul — South Korea’s largest city and national capital — is in the heart of the province … Incheon — South Korea’s third-largest city — is on the coast of the province.

The three jurisdictions are collectively referred to as Sudogwon and cover 4,530 sq mi (11,730 km2), with a combined population of 25.5 million — amounting to over half of the entire population of South Korea.

If my less-than-indepth research is correct, the population of JooHee’s South Korean Gyeonggi-do province alone outnumbers the entire state of Florida’s population by about 5 million people however the entire state of Florida is about 15 times larger in area at 65,755 sq mi (170,300 km2) than the South Korean province. Not sure why, but I find population comparisons fascinating.

JooHee sent an introduction for Ra-On which I’ve edited a bit and hope I’ve retained the essence of her message:

I learned about Zentangle through my child’s art time. I was so excited and started to learn more about Zentangle by studying books and also from the internet.

But to get more detailed information, I took lessons from a Korean CZT and then I participated at seminar in 2018 in U.S.A. and became a Certified Zentangle Teacher at CZT32.

This is a pattern from my text books that I did a lot during my school times with my friends.

I’ve named it Ra-On, which is a Korean word meaning happy or joyful.

Ra-On is another versatile tangle. You can change and combine the overlapping basic shapes along the “spine” as I did for my example. You can alter their sizes. You can explore a whole range of fills and embellishments. And using color for a ZIA version adds another range of options for experimentation.

JooHee illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ra-On below where she demonstrates variations in a monotangle using a variety of geometric shapes. Easy, fun, mesmerizing.
