How to draw RINGRILL

Zentangle pattern: Ringrill. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Ringrill is our tangle of the day from CZT Sunali Shah of Mumbai, India, and it’s her first on the site.

Sunali came to Zentangle® with an interesting and extensive background in design, as we learn from her site:

Sunali Shah is one of Mumbai’s most prolific mixed media designers. She graduated with honors in Textile Weaving and Fashion Designing from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai.

Sunali’s technical knowledge of textiles combined with fine arts, enabled her to discover traditional fabrics and create prêt à porter ensembles which incorporated traditional weaves and prints with a modern cut and fit appealing to the global Indian diaspora.

Over the years her creative and customized expressions have been appreciated by young and old alike in curated fashion events in India, Singapore, Kenya, London and New York. She has designed costumes for Bollywood movies and for commercial advertisements as well as created over two hundred bridal trousseaus over the last 25 years.

In 2015, I became a Certified Zentangle Teacher at Rick and Maria’s CZT seminar in USA. Zentangle has changed me. I think of it as a precious gift that I have been fortunate to receive. I teach Zentangle so that I am able to, in some small way, pay it forward.”

As for how her Ringrill tangle came about, Sunali writes:

I was sitting in a restaurant waiting for my friend and I saw this beautiful pattern on a wooden partition.

It reminded me of rings dangling from a frame. I deconstructed the pattern once I reached home.

Sunali illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ringrill in a downloadable PDF with examples including variations here on her blog.

Below the download image on her page Sunali includes several examples showing her tangle’s versatility:

  • in her example on a square Zentangle tile she demonstrates Ringrill as two different ribbon-style borders together with the Zentangle®-original Betweed
  • in a Zendala tile example she uses Ringrill as a center motif (fragment) with the Zentangle®-originals Mooka and Tipple with Hanny Waldburger’s Abundies, and
  • on a 3Z tile example, Ringrill is again shown as a center motif with Keeko and Printemps.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your comment helps motivate them to continue to share!
