We might conclude Swiss CZT Hanny Waldburger has a thing for tattoos. Her first tangle on the site, Tami, was inspired by a tattoo she noticed on her hairdresser.
Today’s Tatu tangle, her ninth on the site, was inspired by a tattoo she saw on Instagram and “it came to me, when I was doing Zenbuttons”.
BTW, if you haven’t explored Zenbuttons yet, be sure to check out CZT Marguerite Samama’s free tutorial here on TanglePatterns.com. They’re easy and fun to do!
What is unusual about Hanny’s grid-based Tatu, is that she demonstrates how, using just two simple steps you can create three different fragments. These different fragments create 3 similar but different end results. She features two versions here along with her Icantoo tangle in this lovely Zentangle® tile.
Exploring different shading and fill options, and changing scale and line weights also create interesting variations of Tatu.
Hanny illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Tatu here on her blog.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share!

A word about rulers
Many great tangles begin with an underlying inked grid (reticula) and they are always drawn freehand.
"Just as we point out that there's no eraser in a Zentangle Kit, there's also no ruler. ... With a relaxed focus and leaving rulers and preconceived notions aside, expect to be surprised and delighted." ~ Zentangle blog.
I've noticed quite a few "Zentangles" — and even tangle instructions — around the net where a some type of straight edge, stencil or other mechanical aid has been used to draw the underlying grid. Or even (egad!) to draw straight lines (or circles) making up the pattern within a Zentangle.
As CZT Sandy Hunter writes, "there is no zen to be had in the preoccupation with perfection."
Here's what I say ...
Zentangle is all about you and your pen
So put away the rulers and experience the Zen.
and you may quote me. 🙂

Hanny does create some very nice tangles, and she then uses them so beautifully. This one is so simple, I do believe even my “mind maze” can handle learning to do it correctly 🙂
A good easy fun tangle to send me off on vacation with. Thanks
Thank you Joyce, I am happy to hear Tatu is simple, I love patterns to be easy and fun, that increases the flow of tangling!
Linda you are right I have a thing for tattoos even though I don‘t have one on my skin. I just love the wonderful patterns I see in all these beautful geometric tattoos! ?? Thank you Linda, for giving Tatu the welcome on your site!
Such a simple but pretty tangle. With the shading, it makes me think of the beautiful Delft tiles that I am so fond of. I look forward to trying them in ultramarine blue.
Thank you for sharing this tangle. I like the variations. I enjoyed drawing this.
