How to draw CARACOLE

Today in the U.S. we observe Memorial Day to honor and give thanks to all the brave American men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service to this country. They are the fallen heroes who made it possible for us to enjoy our precious freedom.

We will always be incredibly grateful for those who serve in the military, bless them and their families who also serve in their way.

And while we’re enjoying the other traditional activities of our Memorial Day holiday, I realize many of you have a “regular old Monday” so we have Hungarian tangler Lily Moon’s Caracole tangle for you to explore.

Lily has many lovely tangles on the site and Caracole is her eighth.

Caracole is similar in concept to CZT Diane Tai’s Alaura, a tangle named in tribute Diane’s CZT mother, Laura Liu.

Where Alaura tackles the spiral from the outside-in, Caracole works from the inside-out. And to my mind Lily’s Caracole is easier to execute. I did find it a challenge to envision what was going on around the outside edge of the pattern where it extends off the tile in order to get the angles in sync, but it’s a fun and interesting tangle to explore.

Lily illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Caracole here on her blog and in her steps image Lily shows a bunch of ways to vary Caracole with fills and auras and some Zentangle®-original tangles. In the additional tile Lily demonstrates Caracole along with Cherryl Moote’s Boucle and JJ LaBarbera’s Verve.
