How to draw DANZER

Zentangle pattern: Danzer. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Hurricane Harvey, now a tropical storm, continues to drench Texas causing “catastrophic flooding“. The images of flooded Houston at this link on The Washington Post are simply unbelievable. And heartbreaking.

The New York Times has posted a collection of its “most powerful photographs” related to the storm.

“This disaster’s going to be a landmark event,” Brock Long, FEMA administrator, said on CNN’s State of the Union program. “This is a storm that the United States has not seen yet.” Our thoughts and prayers continue to be for everyone affected by this dreadful, unimaginable storm.

Turning our focus to something we can conceive of …

Today’s lovely and very easy tangle Danzer is from Vancouver, Washington, tangler Prairie Kittin and it’s her first on the site.

It seems sleepless nights are not uncommon within our tangling ranks. Recently CZT Milde Weiss created her Bysomnus from a bout of sleeplessness, and about her Danzer tangle Prairie writes,

I created Danzer one night when I couldn’t sleep.

I named it Danzer because, to me, it kind of looks like a row of dancers.

Easy to tangle, Danzer benefits from some shading to give it some cone-like dimension.

Prairie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Danzer below. She features Danzer with variations in a cool Zentangle tile with several Zentangle-original tangles. As she demonstrates in Step 6, ribbon-style tangles can also be used as filler tangles by placing the ribbons side-by-side.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. • This looks like a fun and versatile tangle – my favorite kind! I love the variations and shading options on your sample tile. Thanks, Prairie Kittin! This will start my Zentangle exploration for the day. 🙂

Oh, do I know those sleepless nights! Getting ready to move 700+ miles from my native northern lower Michigan to Missouri, my mind whirls with myriad details, and there are many nights when I’m sitting here drawing more tangles, trying to get myself to just let go and relax. Danzer looks like it’s going to be one that I’ll get to enjoy learning over these last few nights before I leave my beloved Michigan and head to a new(ish) life with very dear friends and my “other family.”

This will also be a welcome distraction during the several nights I’ll be sleeping in hotels on the way down; I don’t do well with beds that aren’t my own (do any of us, if we aren’t military personnel?), and find myself staying up until at least 3:00 a.m. most of the time. Drawing tangles will be very helpful in settling my mind, and I think this one will be “just what the sleep doctor ordered” 🙂

I really like the looks of this new tangle. Thanks for submitting it, Prairie Kittin, and thanks for posting it, Linda.

Prairie Kittin, like Joyce Blodgett has said, I can also relate to sleeping problems. Once I finally do get to sleep, I am up every 2 to 2 1/2 hours, making potty runs, sigh! Hope your sleep improves!!

  • Lovely versatile tangle with possibilities to make variations on, I like this pattern very much!

  • So many variations with this one. Thanks for sharing a sleepless night with us all.

  • Lynne Foerster

I always love seeing your zentangle designs and having them shown, step by step, makes me think I too can create them. Thanks for sharing your talent with us!

  • Anna

I’ve really enjoyed drawing your lovely, striking and easy tangle which lends itself to many variations. Thank you!
