How to draw ABEKO

Zentangle pattern: Abeko. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. It’s been a little while since we had a new tangle addition from Washington state CZT Lynn Mead whose Fassett is a very popular tangle on the site. Today Lynn is back with another lovely tangle.

Abeko, Lynn writes, is so-named …

because to me it’s like a combination of Abundies [CZT Hanny Waldburger] and either Eke or Echoism [Zentangle®-originals].

AB from ABundies, EK from EKe and O from EchOism.

As I do with many tangles, I find it easiest to draw the beginning Steps of Abeko in the orientation shown in my example above. I can see where my pen nib is going and my loops tend to stay more parallel to each other than when I draw it in a “landscape mode”. Each one of us is different though, and you might just prefer the landscape mode. Try both and see which is the most comfortable for your hand and your pen.

Lynn illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Abeko here on her blog and in her steps and beautiful Zentangle tiles she shows several easy ways to vary and embellish this tangle.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
