How to draw SPUPA

Today we have a super simple and quite elegant tangle pattern Spupa, from Taiwan CZT Damy Teng. Just wait until you see all the potential variations for this tangle!

Damy and her daughter Hsin-Ya Hsu recently became Certified Zentangle Teachers and they are located in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.

Kaohsiung City, we learn from Wikipedia, is  “located in southern-western Taiwan … it is by area the largest municipality … and second most populous with a population of approximately 2.77 million. Since its start at 17th century, Kaohsiung has grown from a small trading village, into the political, economic, transportation, manufacturing, refining, shipbuilding, and industrial center of southern Taiwan.” Although Kaohsiung City’s history started around the 17th Century, Wikipedia notes “archeological studies have found signs of human activity in the region from as long as 7000 years ago.” Amazing, right!? As a relative measure, Christianity is only about 2,000 years old.

Damy and her daughter have shared tangles prior to becoming CZTs and you can locate them on the site by their tags damyt and hsinyah.

The name Spupa comes from Silk Pupa, Damy writes, inspired by the pupa’s overlapping sections. Damy deconstructed the tangle itself from the pattern in this wallpaper.

Spupa is easy as pie, composed simply of overlapping S strokes, linked together like a chain. As simple as my example is above, Damy illustrates many ways you can vary this tangle pattern including several variations on the S strokes themselves.

Here Damy shows an alternate way of drawing her tangle. Sometimes I find it helpful to turn the tile sideways to draw the S strokes “laying down”, if you will.
