How to draw BUTTER

Zentangle pattern: ButterToday’s sweet Butter tangle pattern comes to us from Athens, Greece, and it was created by 6-year-old Danae Triantafyllopoulou. Danae’s Mom, Alexandra drew the steps for us.

I feel reasonably safe in saying Danae is the youngest tangler to have a pattern on the site! Isn’t it wonderful how Zentangle® is loved and appreciated all around this beautiful world of ours and by all ages.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is “one of the world’s oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years”, according to Wikipedia. There’s so much to learn about the city and all its iconic ancient sites, but here’s something I just learned about how the city was named.

“The goddess Athena and the god Poseidon had many disagreements and battles between them, and one of these was a race to be the Patron God of the city. In an attempt to compel the people, Poseidon created a salt water spring by striking the ground with his trident, symbolizing naval power. However, when Athena created the olive tree, symbolizing peace and prosperity, the Athenians, under their ruler Cecrops, accepted the olive tree and named the city after Athena.”

“In 2012, Athens was ranked the world’s 39th richest city by purchasing power and the 77th most expensive in a UBS [Swiss financial services company] study.” Who knew. And if you’re headed in that direction here are 522 things to see and do while you’re there!

Alexandra writes,

I often tangle in the afternoons along with my six-year-old daughter Danae. It’s a wonderful pass-time that we both like and spend hours doing it.

The other day I was tangling the C-Bun and she was designing her own inspirations. Suddenly, she exclaimed: ‘Look, I’ve got a new one, isn’t that gorgeous?’

I agreed… and asked her for permission to submit it.

Danae’s grid-based tangle pattern even looks lovely at an early stage of its construction (through Step 4) as shown here on the right. Those white spaces add a rhythmic visual interest without going any further. And here comes Danae’s original Butter

Alexandra illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Butter below with a lovely monotangle example of her daughter Danae’s tangle pattern.
