How to draw MAK-RAH-MEE

Zentangle pattern: Mak-rah-mee. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. It has been quite some time since we’ve had a new tangle pattern from my Tasmanian friend and CZT classmate, Michele Beauchamp (aka Shelly Beauch on flickr) but Mak-rah-mee was well worth the wait. It’s a beaut, eh?

Mak-rah-meestarts with keeko but reminds me of the knots in macramé. Years ago I loved making macramé pot plant hangers and wall hangings so I thought a good name might be mak-rah-mee (the pronunciation from the dictionary),” writes Michele. “Loop, tie, weave and tangle. A fun way to get yourself in a knot!

I found it helpful to focus on extending the ties and loops from the “straight” sides of the Keeko motif, not from the bumpy bit. This creates the realistic knots at the heart of Mak-rah-mee. This tangle also benefits from space to work in so you have room to swirl the loops and ties; my small (actual-size) example doesn’t really do it justice.

Michele illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Mak-rah-mee here on her blog and, as always, she inspires with her elegant example Zentangles.

If you think Michele’s art looks familiar to you, it is! Her wonderful creativity graces the covers of my TanglePatterns.com TANGLE GUIDE. She has also shared two excellent tutorials here on the site — “It’s Spiralicious – A Zentangle Spiral Guide“, and “Exploring the elegance of Zentangle in a larger format“.

Check out the tag micheleb for more of Michele’s patterns on TanglePatterns.com.

BTW – Today’s the last day of CZT XIII and its class of enthusiastic trained teachers is rarin’ to go. Congratulations to them all! The next Zentangle® teacher certification seminar will be held in Providence RI in June 2014 (more information here).
