Ionic is an easy and versatile tangle pattern to start out the week. It’s from Canadian CZT® Margaret Bremner. She writes, “The elements bear a resemblance to the Ionic style capitals of Greek columns, thus the name.”
From Wikipedia: “A classical order is one of the ancient styles of classical architecture, each distinguished by its proportions and characteristic profiles and details, and most readily recognizable by the type of column employed. Three ancient orders of architecture — the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian — originated in Greece.” The style of the capitals is a distinguishing characteristic of Greek columns — Doric style capitals are “plain round”, the Ionic style is known for its “two opposed volutes (also called scrolls)”, and the Corinthian style is quite ornate, “decorated with two rows of acanthus leaves and four scrolls.”
Here in my example I’ve placed the Ionic border pattern back-to-back and included a variation from Margaret’s original. There are many ways you can dress this tangle up and have fun with it. Be sure to take a close look at Margaret’s completed Zentangles for some variations and imaginative ways of using Ionic.
Margaret illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ionic here on her blog.
