Once captivated by Zentangle® you become observant of small details and begin noticing patterns everywhere. Even in the flooring in your attic.
And that’s what inspired Beth Snoderly and today’s tangle pattern, Quare. “I saw part of this pattern in my new attic flooring. I figured I would tangle it a bit and came up with Quare.”
This is a great Monday tangle. It’s simple, you can really get into a rhythm/zone drawing it, and even while focusing on making deliberate strokes it fills a section quite quickly. Shading really makes it pop.
Here are Beth’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Quare, along with some tips and two monotangles using Quare. The second monotangle illustrates some variations using circles and what Beth calls a “diagonal split”.
Quare starts with a grid of squares or rectangles. Then you “split” up a column or row and start the drawing the half squares. I usually start on the right then make a smaller one on the left, then back to the right then left, and continue until it looks complete. Usually I have 2-4 half squares on each side. You can play with the size of the grid and get different looks.
And here’s Beth’s Quare variations monotangle …

Excellent tangle this one, intriguing to look at and to do.
I LIKE this one! I very much enjoy optical illusions, and this is so much fun to work with!
Ooooo so love this one! Looks like the paper is folded giving it a 3D effect! Thank you Beth! And thank you Linda for your hard work on this site!
Love it! It almost looks like those posters where you relax your eyes, soften your focus and the image becomes 3d…
Fun Pattern. This one worked out quite well 🙂
