How to draw Z-TRIK

Zentangle pattern: Z-trik. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Israel’s Yamit Fridman has shared Strings 011 and 036 in our TanglePatterns String “bank”, and now here’s her Z-trik tangle for us to enjoy. Yamit shares her Zentangle-inspired art on flickr under the name netomela.

Z-trik can be done with or without a grid so naturally I chose the grid version for my example.

This tangle can take on quite different looks based on whether you are consistent with the corner you choose to begin filling in each space in Step 2. Here I started each grouping in the point at the center, but you can be random with it and still have it look great. I added a bit of shading at the center of each group. If drawn on a bit larger scale than what I’ve done, you can also play with filling in some of the inner spaces.

Yamit writes,

I discovered Zentangle through the internet about a year ago and i just can’t stop ever since. This is my first tangle ever and i’m very excited about it. There are no CZTs in Israel (that i know of) and i can’t get to the USA so all my learning of the Zentangle wonder-world is through your website. I really love to tangle … The inspiration for my tangle came from a tangle i really love and use a lot – Cruffle. This tangle is very easy to do and that’s what i like about it. You can use it freely or with a grid.

Here are Yamit’s instructions for drawing Z-trik. As she writes at Steps 2 and 3, once you pick the spot to start the inner triangles you draw them all in one continuous line without lifting your pen. I found that keeping that continuous line steady a bit of a challenge, but that’s the fun part of the focus. And it reminded me to slow down!

  • Hi, Linda. Cute pattern! I like the new changed feature you added to your website by showing samplers of other tangle patterns done by the artist that created the new tangle pattern you’re featuring.

Dear Linda, I am very fascinated by all these nice tangles and especially about the ideas behind it. I live in Germany and wonder if there are any CZTs here. I haven’t read nor heard anything about this lovely method of meditating before. I ordered a zentangle kit from USA, do you perhaps know how long it takes to come to Germany? I am already encouraging my patients to try the tangling, I am an OT.
I very much look forward every day to receive new ideas from your lovely website and thank you so much for your wonderful inspirations!
    Yours dearly Angelika

  • I love this one. Super simple and really fun to do. I played with it today and put it up on my Instagram. 😀 I’m TarotbyArwen there if anyone wants to see. I really adore this blog.

I keep thinking that I don’t have the ideas for new tangles but I have been using this process in my tangles and mandalas for many years. I actually thought it was a tangle already and I had picked it up somewhere in my travels.

  • DianneT

post script. I use this in all sorts of shapes and it looks great.

  • Chris

    I love this tangle!

  • Sue Zanker

I love this one, I was playing with it yesterday on my “daily tile” and I tried blacking in the very tiny, central triangle……looks pretty fetching as a change of pace!

  • Susie Achter

Just ran across this in the alphabetical listing and it is a wonderful pattern. Thank you for sharing.
