The tangle pattern Bilt comes to us from Greensboro, NC, CZT® Lisa Skeen.
Lisa writes that the pattern was “inspired by architecture I saw on a trip to Asheville, NC this summer. It looks a little complicated, but it’s VERY easy! It could be varied by using curved lines instead of straight.
I am an elementary school art teacher, and have been teaching Zentangle to my kids as a means of helping them to increase their focus. They LOVE it! I’m going to be taking it a little further with them this year, as well. I was part of CZT6 in May, 2011 and have been teaching in the Greensboro, NC area since June.”
I could be quite mistaken but I’m guessing Lisa’s inspiration is the famous National Historic Landmark, Biltmore. According to Wikipedia, Biltmore is “a Châteauesque-styled mansion near Asheville, North Carolina, built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 … is the largest privately-owned home in the United States, at 135,000 square feet (12,500 m2) … and featuring 250 rooms.” Mind boggling.
Lisa illustrates the steps for drawing her tangle pattern Bilt here. Update January 2019: the link is no longer functioning so I’ve added the steps from my archives until I get a new link.

Hey Linda,
Thanks for posting my pattern! Very exciting to see my pattern here.
The pattern inspiration actually came from a building near Biltmore, but not Biltmore itself. 🙂
Thanks again! LPS
This is a gorgeous pattern. I love the depth that can be achieved with a pattern like this. Well done Lisa!!! Its great!!
