How to draw SLING-SLANG

Zentangle pattern: Sling-Slang. Image © Linda Farmer and ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. The pretty, swirly Sling-Slang ribbon-style tangle shared with us today is from Swiss tangler Lisette Hofer, and it’s her first on the site.

Lisette introduces herself and explains “how I became a Zentangle addict“:

I live near Zurich (Switzerland) and work in a real estate company. In my fifties I started a shiatsu training for animals, later humans. When I prepared for the final examination in 2013 I had such a lot on my mind that my head was almost bursting… (I was not 20 anymore). “By chance” I came across the book “one zentangle a day” and was hooked. I started tangling daily and thus could calm my mind.

At the same time I looked out for a CZT in Switzerland – in vain. It must have been in 2014 when I discovered Hanny Waldburger, the first CZT in Switzerland. She is an amazing teacher and I’ve attended many work-shops by her.

Zentangle has become such an enrichment to my life. It lifts me up when I’m in the doldrums and it’s the icing on a cake when I’m happy – such a beautiful gift.

Isn’t that just about the perfect description of how Zentangle enriches our lives? Gave me a smile. Lisette continues,

This pattern flowed from my pen as I wanted to draw a border.

I name it “Sling-Slang”. The black and white versions remind me of Yin and Yang.

Sling stands for the curvy lines and Slang sounds a bit like “Schlange” which is “snake” in German.

For those who might be direction-challenged, as I can be, here’s what I did to get Sling-Slang in a straight line for my example — or for it to curve if that’s where you’re headed — I used Cadent as my inspiration and “before” Step 1, first I placed the dots/orbs that are the center of the swirls. From there you simply connect the dots/orbs with the take-off-and-land technique using large swirly S shapes. Works a treat. A wide variety of simple embellishments and auras give you lots of variations on this sweet tangle.

Lisette illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Sling-Slang below and she features it in a dramatic contrasting Zentangle tile with some Sling-Slang variations. CZT Sue Jacobs’s Bumps tangle fits nicely around the curved edges of Sling-Slang as do the random drops of Flux with orbs scattered around the tile.
