It’s also a very good reminder about being conscious of making deliberate strokes in Zentangle®.

South African Judy Voges shares her tangle with us and it’s her first on the site. Judy is registered to become a CZT a little later in the year.

Her tangle is named Zooloo because as she “saw the emerging shapes they reminded me of the traditional fighting shields and spears of the Zulu tribe from KwaZulu Natal in South Africa.”

Traditional Zulu Shield and fighting spears. The Zulu shield is no longer used in battle and is now used for traditional Zulu ceremonies such as weddings and funerals.

Judy introduces herself,

I am a 2nd Grade teacher and have been teaching for the last 35 years!

I have always been interested in patterns in crafts etc and have been making cards for many years – I seem to go through phases and discovered Zentangles on the internet about a year or so ago. (my Latest batch of cards were very Zentangle inspired!)

I did a beginner workshop last year with a CZT and I am very excited to say that I am travelling to Providence in April to become a CZT myself. A huge adventure for me as it will be the first time travelling on my own and my first trip to the USA!

Zentangle pattern: Zooloo. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatteThere are a good many ways you can fill and shade the shapes in Zooloo and achieve different looks. This minimalist version on the right is very attractive to my eye. If you are methodical when doing the strokes to fill areas in a grid pattern, you never know what additional ways you might discover to vary the basic pattern.

Judy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Zooloo below and demonstrates it in a monotangle using part of the Zooloo motif as her string.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Chinese-New-Year-2016
Ring in the New Year! Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year, Year of the Monkey.

The New Year festival is centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, and the Philippines. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the lunar new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours. ~ Wikipedia

According to The Telegraph, “The Chinese New Year party in London will be the biggest outside of Asia”. Here’s The Telegraph‘s guide on the traditional celebrations of the Chinese New Year and everything you need to know about the year of the Monkey. Check out the charts there to see what Chinese Zodiac sign you were born under.

Best wishes and good fortune to all our tangling friends celebrating this happy occasion.

Beautiful and so simple to draw! An awesome new tangle. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • Judy, Zooloo is very striking!! Beautiful design and great self-shading that comes from line density. I also love your combination of straight & curved lines. Thank you! I look forward to drawing this one. 🙂 Also … I am so happy for you to be attending the upcoming CZT Seminar. My few days there in 2013 was one of the BEST experiences of my life! The positive, creative energy of Maria & Rick et al along with the 100+ attendees infused me with inspiration and joy that’s still with me today. Enjoy!!!

  • Statch

Beautiful pattern! I especially like that monotangle — what a wonderfully creative idea.

  • I love it! I can’t wait to try it.

  • Sue Zanker

One of those patterns I love, one which looks harder than it is ! The sort of pattern where people go…..”how on earth did you do that one?” I shall enjoy giving it a whirl, for sure!

  • Love this tangle pattern. The tile using the tangle is very striking. Looking forward to creating with your pattern

  • That’s a lovely pattern Judy! So happy to see another South African joining the ranks of CZT! Have fun at the seminar, it was a really wonderful experience. Brenda CZT #13

  • Val Steele

I get very excited when I seen posts from fellow South Africans and I really love your Zooloo. Have a wonderful time when you attend your workshop. I look forward to seeing more creations.

  • Sandra Riggins

I liked it. Time consuming but has a nice uniformity.

  • Pat Floerke

I love this deconstruction! Thanks, Judy and Linda.

  • Beryl Prusinoski

Thanks for the tangle. It’s based on a square grid but looks rectangular when it’s finished, which I like. I also like your monotangle – it reminds me of stained glass windows in a cathedral.
I hope you enjoy your trip to the US and that you feel very welcome. And I’m sure the class will be great; I hope to take it myself sometime.

  • Sue Leslie

Thanks for sharing Judy V. This is a neat tangle and so easy. Hoping to get to meet you in April as I am doing the CZT in April as well.

  • Mooi so, Judy! Geniet die VSA en die kursus. Well done. Would love to hear from you after qualifying.

  • Donna Lamoureux

Thank you for such a wonderful tangle. I used 2 different sized Micron pens for the design (05 for the interior lines and 01 for everything else) I really need to concentrate when I do this which is good.

  • Beautiful!! Such a fun tangle!

  • Mary D'Angelo, CZT32

Dear Judy, Today I played with your pattern Zooloo for the first time. I enjoyed it very much! This year I began learning a new pattern a day just in case Pennsylvania permits our Libraries to have live classes again. For sure I will be teaching Zooloo! Thankyou, Mary D’Angelo, CZT32
