How to draw ‘BRELLA

Zentangle pattern: 'BrellaApril showers bring May flowers …” – from a poem recorded in 1610 and later a proverb recorded in song in 1886. – Wikipedia.

And April brings bunnies too … 😉

Canadian CZT Bunny (Frances) Wright shares her fun ’Brella tangle pattern with us today. She’s previously shared her very popular Heartrope and Inaura tangles with us.

She writes,

I saw this pattern on a sweater and decided it would be a great tangle..and with ‘April Showers’ (as she broke into song) hopefully on the way, we all could use a nice ’Brella.

It takes a bit of work but I really enjoyed the effect of drawing the lines over and over. You can establish a lovely rhythm with this pattern.

As you will see from Bunny’s steps below, I alternated rows (or columns) of ’Brella and an interesting chevron pattern develops. (I chose a variation because I’m up to the eyeballs in Benadryl and my strokes are a little wiggly.) What’s interesting is if you rotate it, there’s another different look.

As is always true in Zentangle®, there is no right side up with either tangles or Zentangles.

Bunny illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing ’Brella below and she shows several variations. With Bunny’s original version, shading adds some nice over-under texture to the tangle. I love the cool effect she got in her first example by leaving some of the grid squares blank. There’s no rule that says you have to fill them all.
