How to draw TIZZY

Zentangle pattern: TizzyTizzy is a tangle pattern from Swiss CZT Hanny Waldburger.

When we added Hanny’s first tangle Tami on the site last Fall, we learned a lot about Switzerland we didn’t know before. (I’m using the royal “we” of course 😉 )

Hanny played around with this tangle for a few months before drawing up her steps and she writes,

My CZT 14 friends from the U.S.A. helped me find a name for it, when I couldn’t think of one. Georgia from Washington said, it made her feel tizzy to look at it. I didn’t know that word and looked it up. The funny thing is, that in German we have an expression for this which says kind of ‘ I am totally out of the grid’. As Tizzy is a pattern that doesn’t fit in a grid, but rather wants to be in a circle or wild and free, I thought it was the perfect name for it. :-)”

Tizzy‘s original steps begin with a diamond-shaped center but as you will see, it can begin with virtually any shape at its center and the auras grow out from there as far, or not, as you want to take it. My example experiments with three shapes in the center.

Hanny illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Tizzy and shows a variety of ways to vary it here on her blog.

Tangle or Zentangle?

Often Zentangle newbies describe their drawings containing several patterns as "a tangle". Or conversely, refer to a tangle as "a Zentangle". Not so.

A tangle is one (1) single pattern.

As described on zentangle.com, "In its verb form 'tangle' means to draw a tangle. You tangle a tangle, and in that process create Zentangle art."

A Zentangle is the finished art on a tile containing one or more tangles. A Zentangle containing just one tangle is called a monotangle.

And while we're on the subject of using this wonderful art form's terminology correctly, as for "Zentangling" or "Zentangled" the terms to use are tangling or tangled. 🙂

Love Tizzy! Can’t wait to play with it!

Cool! Cool! Cool! Reminds me of “Popcloud” but I always have trouble with that one. Yours? I grabbed a piece of scratch paper and a nearby pencil and tried it immediately. Boom! I had a Tizzy! Fun!

    Hanny,
I love this tangle. I’ve been having fun playing with it today in my sketchbook. I’m sure it will be featured on my next tile.

  • Thank you! I’m glad you like it and looking forward to seeing it on some tiles in the future…????

Hanny. I feel a “Tizzy Fit” coming on! Thank you for sharing your beautiful tangle with us. I am constantly amazed that a curved line, circle, half circle, straight line, etc. repeated over and over can evolve into such beautiful art.

Thank you, Linda, for providing a stage to share, learn and enjoy the fantastic art of Zentangle. I will always be greatful to you for all of your hard work.

Hanny, Tizzy just came up on Linda’s Tangle Refresher 130. I have used this tangle a bit and I’m glad Linda pointed it out again (Thank you Linda!) I just used it on today’s tile. I’s so much fun! Thanks again for sharing this one with us.

    • Thank you all, I am happy to hear you like Tizzy. I still love to draw it, because it calms me with the sensation of expansion. So when I need that, Tizzy is my first choice !!!!
