Meringue — not to be confused with Merengue — is a very pretty tangle pattern from Connecticut CZT Kelley Kelly.
This is another one of those tangles that’s almost a technique rather than a pattern per se. Meringue flows and develops with a graceful rhythm and you’ll always end up with a different outcome. It’s a “beaut” and I predict it will become very popular with those of us who love those curvy, flow-y tangles.
Kelley says Meringue was inspired by a quilting pattern, however she found the original pattern “a little too regulated (wonderful for quilting, not so good for Miss Unsteady Hands here to draw) and it shifted as I tried different variations. In the end, … I wound up with [Meringue].” And we’re glad she did.
The initial stroke for Meringue is either an S-shape or a “backwards” S, Kelley calls “wings”. The wings are then aura-ed with strokes meeting at the same point, and more wings are added or connected randomly. A bit of delicate shading adds the crowning touch. I’ve left my example very simple, wait until you see Kelley’s. Kelley plays with spacing by pairing some of her strokes and you could also vary this with some striping which looks pretty cool. (Anyone else have an urge for a slice of Lemon Pie??)
Kelley illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Meringue here on her blog along with a photo of the original inspiration pattern. In her lovely examples, Kelley shows Meringue accompanied by the ever-versatile official tangle Tipple.
Update May 9, 2020: Kelley’s blog has gone MIA, in the meantime here are her instructions.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
