Lichen is an appealing new tangle pattern from German tangler Jennifer Hohensteiner.
I love minimalist tangles like this not only because they are so simple and soothing to draw, but they can fill a space easily with such an interesting graphic impact. And as Jennifer notes, Lichen can grow in any direction to fill any shaped section.
“I saw a plant with triangles for leaves on the wall of a Starbucks somewhere and it led to this idea. I just keep adding new lines until the pattern covers the desired area. It can grow in any shape or direction, like a plant that grows along the ground (or rock) and covers it – hence the name Lichen.
I have been addicted to tangling for about six months now … I have been painting for several years but due to other demands have had less and less time for it. It had become an area of stress and frustration for me. With Zentangle® I have not only found a creative artistic outlet that I can pursue in shorter bursts of time (and minimal set-up, and no brushes to wash!), but I found an approach to creating which is restorative. I am hooked and I am grateful. I am not CZT but it is my goal. I live in Germany and as of now there are no CZTs listed in Germany. Before my 50th birthday in 2015, I intend to get that certification (+knock on wood+).”
As simple as this tangle is, don’t be surprised when you discover your imagination coming up with lots of Lichen variations using different shapes in place of the triangles, and a wide range of embellishments.
Jennifer illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Lichen below and demonstrates a couple of variations in the Step 6 box. Her completed Zentangle features several Lichen amongst some official tangles. I really like how Jennifer added a bit of a drop shadow to her tangles. Very effective.

This is a great tangle to use in those places where you want to fill in or as a border. Thanks for the tangle. I enjoy your site.
Lynn
Cute. Cute. Cute. Fun. Fun. Fun.
Love this one! Great to balance the heavy-ink patterns and the ones with so many parallel lines. Whimsical and graphical at the same time.
What is the best pens to use on Keds. I want it to stay. Am so excited I finally got a pair to fit. Thanks ahead for any info. I have the set of great micro pens and G2PILOT gel pens. Wonder if these will work? .? Thanks. B
This pattern resembles a plant that grows wild here called sheperds purse. I can see this on a valentine tangle with hearts instead of triangles. I think I will use this one often. Thank you!
How fun this is! I also loved the design you used in your Zentangle (beautiful)! I am anxious to try this. Thank you for sharing.
Wow. It’s so simple, but absolutely gorgeous!
Very simple, easy and can play too, will be using this often.
