For quite some time California tangler Barbara Finwall has been sharing Strings with our community on TanglePatterns. By my reckoning these are Barbara’s contributions so far: 012, 023, 030, 038, and 052. You might also recognize Barbara’s Zentangle®-inspired artistry on flickr where she’s known as banar.
Today we have Barbara’s first tangle on the site, a lovely new grid-based pattern she named 4 Corners. I used the basic grid Barbara illustrates in the first three steps below and I added just a wee touch of shading. As you’ll see there’s lots of potential with this one.
Barbara introduces herself,
My sister, mother and I started a craft and needlework kit and book company (Banar Designs) about 40 years ago. My sister and I had both worked for advertising agencies in Los Angeles and our mother owned a needlework shop. I met Suzanne McNeill at one of the trade shows and we’ve been friends ever since. She introduced me to Zentangle about three years ago. I haven’t come up for air since. I live in Fallbrook, CA in the middle of an avocado grove.
“Fallbrook is known for its avocado groves and claims the title ‘Avocado Capital of the World.’ … The Avocado Festival is held in the downtown strip annually and frequently draws large crowds.” I love these tidbits I learn on Wikipedia almost as much as I love avocados.
Here Barbara illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing 4 Corners and shows in her Zentangle-inspired drawing that 4 Corners is very adaptable to some cool variations.

Cool! Cool! Cool! I like it. It makes me think of electric fans. Love the variations too.
Love it and love your example- what string is that? You’re so talented!
Amazing what you can find by following Linda’s comments. I love this one. Sort of flowery but the variations make it very different – sort of like fans like Tracy said. Thank you Barbara!
Even a scatterbrain like me can manage it and it looks great.
