Happy Friday and welcome to a brand new month of tangle inspiration!
Our tangle today is Uswoosh from New Zealand tangler Rhiannon McKinstry and it’s her second on the site.
Not only do we have a fun and possibly a bit challenging tangle, but Rhiannon is also sharing her recipe for Chocolate Porridge and you’ll understand in a moment why …
About her Uswoosh tangle Rhiannon says, “It’s closest to Huggins meets Chainging, with a little of K-Leesi thrown in, but is constructed differently to any of them.”
She explains how she came up with Uswoosh,
This tangle was discovered as I made chocolate porridge for Sunday morning breakfast for the family.
As I was stirring the porridge in a lazy figure-8, I could see U’s and C’s forming and swirling after the spoon. The soft swoosh-swoosh sound of the spoon moving through the cocoa infused milky oats. They start as U’s then get little circular swirls off the edge of the spoon as it moves further… and there it was.
Now I just had to figure out how to deconstruct the tangle…
Incidentally, the porridge was delicious. My two year old daughter had three bowls!
Here’s a first on the site, a recipe!
Chocolate Porridge Recipe (4 servings):
2 cups oats
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp cocoa powder
1 Tbsp sugar or sugar substitute
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
4 cups milk, either dairy or almond milk
Microwave: Mix all ingredients together in a large microwave safe bowl.
Microwave on High for 3 minutes at a time, stirring in between, until the oats are cooked (that’s about 11 minutes on my 1100W)
I like to put a silicone baking sheet or silicone cake pan underneath the bowl in the microwave because it tends to bubble over on occasion!
Stovetop: put all ingredients in a large pot and heat, stirring occasionally till boiling.
Turn down the heat a bit, and simmer stirring constantly for about 4 minutes or till cooked.
Uswoosh begins with pairs of offset orbs/dots which are then connected with C curves. In “Step 4” Rhiannon shows another way to connect the orbs for a slightly different shape and in “Step 5” she shows how creating a regular grid of orbs/dots creates an overall pattern.
Rhiannon illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Uswoosh below. In her monotangle tile of Uswoosh ribbons she demonstrates ways to vary and embellish her tangle.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
