This is awesome – here’s a young lad who totally gets the essence of a tangle pattern.
This fine tangle, Swirly Dot, comes from the creative mind of Thomas Gallagher, a 9-year-old artist and new Zentangle® enthusiast. Swirly Dot is simple and fun to draw and has lots of opportunities for variation that produce impressive results.
Thomas resides in the southeast portion of America. He enjoys drawing, playing piano, and practicing Tae Kwon Do. He became interested in Zentangles while observing his mom’s attempts. When Lisa Gallagher submitted the pattern for her son Thomas, she wrote:
“My 11 year old daughter and I have spent the last couple of weeks practicing patterns from your site and others and have enjoyed every minute. I have invited my nine year old son to join us since he enjoys drawing very much, but he has always spent the time ‘creating his own’ instead of attempting tangles created by others. … he is an enthusiastic nine year old trying to grow as an artist.”
As you can see below, Thomas took a great deal of care in presenting his excellent step-by-step instructions for drawing his Swirly Dot tangle.

Very cool!! My daughter now sees patterns everywhere. She is constantly saying, Mom – that would make a great pattern! She has a great eye. She likes for me to draw the designs so she can color them in and she does a beautiful job.

Wow! What an amazing pattern young Thomas created! I am so very impressed and will surely add this to my own repetoire! i am actually a bit embarrassed that I, a 44 year old woman is not able to come up with her own Zentangle, and a young 9 year old boy can!!!!
