How to draw BLOOMERZ

Hi everyone, thanks again for joining me today!

Well if that wasn’t the most amazing fireworks display wrapping up the wonderful Inaugural evening celebrations, I’m not sure what could be better. So many highlights to the day, and such an emotional one in so many ways. Still feeling drained …

Seems like a great time for a little whimsy. The whimsical and fun Bloomerz is from North Carolina tangler Jenna Black and it’s her 10th tangle on the site!

Jenna writes,

I’ve been on a total craze making Zentangle®-inspired bookmarks lately, and I’ve included a lot of pseudo-botanicals in them.

I decided to develop one of my favorites into a tangle pattern, and I’m rather in love with it.

My steps show the first, most basic version of it I came up with, but then I decided to do (yet another!) bookmark exploring all the ways the basic pattern could be interpreted and was amazed how many variations I came up with.

The shape of the bowl added in Step 3 makes a huge difference, as do the embellishments and accompaniments that go with it. I know I haven’t finished exploring it yet, and I think that makes it tons of fun.

If you look really closely, you might notice that the direction of the lines forming the “petals” in Step 4 go a different direction on my steps than they do in the bookmark. After I’d finished the whole bookmark, I decided I liked the more petal-like look better, so that’s what I included in the steps.

Jenna’s bookmark has a wonderful range of Bloomerz on display. There’s even a mildly scary “feed-me”, Audrey II-like one in there.

I played with several examples including a ribbon-style one and one with “no up or down” but the one I settled on just appealed to me the most. So there you have it. Feel free to look at it from any angle 😉

Jenna illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Bloomerz below where she notes you can add variety by changing the bowl shape and embellishing with stems and leaves. Bloomerz can also be tangled as a chain, making a ribbon-style tangle. Let your imagination run wild 🙂

“What Art Can Do” — Art, Poetry and Amanda Gorman

In today’s Painter’s Keys letter, Sara Genn (daughter of the late Canadian artist Robert Genn) writes a wonderful article “What art can do” relating it to Amanda Gorman‘s captivating Inaugural poem, The Hill We Climb.

Sara’s letter includes the text of the poem, Amanda’s bio as the country’s first National Youth Poet Laureate and describes how she was selected for the inaugural honor. The article begins,

“Dear Artist,

In case within the confines of your studio — you were wondering about the relevance of art when the world seems to be disintegrating, you needed only to watch a supernova explode before our collective eyes and ears on television on Wednesday. In the middle of the elder statesmen, bibles, bunting and marine band’s coordinated efforts to galvanize the history-in-the-making moment of the Presidential inauguration, a 22-year-old poet delivered, in her own words, the turning of an American page.

As is art’s purpose, her work, like a thunderbolt, electrified the imaginations and spirits of those watching … “
