Looks like a we’re having a run of bold tangles this week 🙂 Actually, bold is my interpretation of today’s tangle as you’ll see in a moment.
Today’s Mymuze is from Florida CZT Heidi Kay, and it’s her third on the site.
Heidi writes,
My late mother was a master quilter and artist. She and was my best friend and the source of so many of my talents. My Zentangle® story is intrinsically about my mom, as I first discovered Zentangle while going through my mothers studio after she passed away. On her bookshelf was Beckah Kruahula’s One Tangle a Day. She had never shown it to me before or mentioned Zentangle. The book was full of post it notes marking patterns that had inspired her for quilting ideas. I took the book home, played with it, and was instantly smitten with the artform. Indeed it is true, that If not for her passing, I would never have discovered Zentangle. This story gives me goosebumps every time I tell it.
On a recent Friday it was her birthday. I had taken the day off to celebrate her and her art and while I listened to her favorite folk music that she raised me on, I tangled a large color piece based on “fabrics” she used in my favorite quilt of hers.
Its 6 x 9 feet, is a pattern entirely her design, and she cut and pieced it ALL by hand. It is exquisite and is my most treasured possession.
As I was tangling, it dawned on me that the central pattern of this masterpiece was a gorgeous pattern that would make a great tangle.
I have deconstructed and simplified the pattern here. My mom was indeed my muse, the source of my love of patterns and color, and most importantly, my best friend. I hope with this tangle, I can share her talents with the entire Zentangle community, and spread some joy.
For my example of Mymuze I used the quilt itself and Heidi’s example in the lower left of her tile below as my guide, a little different from the tangle itself but I liked the variation.
Heidi illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Mymuze below. “My sample shows Mymuse in its simple form, as a string, as a fragment/border. It is very versatile and a bit addicting if you ask me. There are other ways to draw it, without the central square, with a circle in the center, and as a softer organic looking tangle.”
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. What a stunning quilt. Thank you for sharing it with us.
What a beautiful story. I knew it already, but to see it in words and to see the inspiration behind it is lovely. Your tiles and the pattern are fantastic. Look forward to giving it a spin. Nothing like a great mom.
Beautiful story, quilt and tangle. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Heidi for a beautiful story and a great tangle. Your mum’s quilt is amazing.
What a beautiful quilt! I’m sure I will be using your new tangle. Thank you.
Hi Heidi,
Thank you so much for these brilliant designs inspired by your mom’s artwork. My mom is also my best friend, and today is her birthday. The design you shared has inspired me to make one, myself. I am not very confident about drawing a new design, so I am going to draw the one shared above.
Thanks, once again!
What a wonderfully fun tangle! Thank you so much for sharing!
I’m really enjoying playing with this tile – the bold contrast pops very dynamically!
