How to draw VASE

Greetings, my friends!

The Tour de France has returned! And Stages 1 and 2 have not disappointed although Stage 1 in Nice was pretty horrendous with terrible weather and SO many crashes. As one commentator put it, the start of Stage 2 yesterday looked like “a mummy convention” with so many riders bandaged in gauze after Saturday’s Stage 1 “adventures”. Heck of a way to begin 3 weeks of toil.

My long-time tangling friends will be familiar with our annual July trips-via-sofa to France for three weeks to enjoy the gorgeous scenery and the the world’s most grueling athletic event. C19 (you know what I mean) changed everything this year and we were sad to think our 2020 visit would not happen. But it’s back and we get to enjoy late summer vistas as well as these amazing athletes. Makes life seem a little bit normal again. 🙂

And welcome to Monday’s fun new tangle to explore. Last one for August …

Vase comes to us from Canadian tangler Anastasia Atkinson of Surrey, British Columbia. It’s her first on the site.

I first connected with Zentangle® in 2018 from a workshop by Margaret Bremner. Margaret and myself know each other through the Baha’i community of Surrey, BC, where we got to know each other through service and study.

It wasn’t until recently that I picked up Zentangle again, and began to explore it for myself. For many years I have felt disconnected from my creativity. I would often reminisce about my high school years, where I spent many hours in the art room. The space of an art room is so inspiring to me, but not because of the variety of supplies or examples of art on the wall. It was the environment of students sharing creativity and learning new ways to express themselves. It’s taken me a long while to realize that I needed a community to rekindle my creativity, and I have found that through Zentangle and the Mosaic app.

My tangle inspiration started with a flower pot, but calling it “Pot” or “Planter” seemed funny, so we are going with “Vase”.

After experimenting with the tangle, it transformed into a simple step-out of curvy lines followed by aura.

You could say it’s a close cousin to “Allium” and “Lantern-Pho“, but the deconstruction is a little different and takes the tangle in a new direction.

Gentle lines or crazy lines can be used to start this tangle. It will easily transition and move around other tangles too.

What sets it apart is the specific pattern of inking in-between the aura lines, to create a flowing zebra-like pattern.

Since it’s very dramatic it stands out well without much shading. I think it will depend on the tangles that are used with it, hopefully my example featuring “Beadlines” and “Featherfall” will give you an idea.

I’ve added a link below to the free tutorial on how to draw four different kinds of grids (reticula), including the ogee grid on which Vase is based. Vase is formed on a nice loose ogee grid that I found easier to manage than some of the more precise ones. Inking in the curvy auras is definitely therapeutic.
