Sampa is a cool 3D grid-based tangle from Brazilian CZT Dina Schaffer, and it’s her first on the site.
Dina is from the CZT16 class and she lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Oh boy, geography lesson!! Some excerpts I extracted from the Wikipedia entry:
São Paulo is a municipality in the Southeast Region of Brazil. The metropolis is an alpha global city and the most populous city in Brazil, the Western Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere, besides being the largest Portuguese-speaking city in the world.
The name of the city honors the Apostle, Saint Paul of Tarsus.
The municipality is also the Earth’s 11th largest city proper by population. The city is the capital of the surrounding state of São Paulo, the most populous and wealthiest state in Brazil. It exerts strong international influences in commerce, finance, arts and entertainment.
… the metropolitan areas located around the Greater São Paulo created a megalopolis with more than 30 million inhabitants, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.
… The city has the 11th largest GDP in the world.
São Paulo is a cosmopolitan, melting pot city, home to the largest Arab, Italian, and Japanese diasporas … São Paulo is also home to the largest Jewish population in Brazil … In 2016, inhabitants of the city were native to over 200 different countries.
I love learning about other places and you certainly get an impression of São Paulo as a massive, populous cosmopolitan city. Now that we know a little about her home city, let’s meet Dina,
I’m very proud to say that I’m the only CZT in Brazil, and, by the time I got my certification I was the only one in South America as well. Not anymore.
I live in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil and, so far, I introduced Zentangle to more than 300 people. Some of them keep having classes with me every week.
I’d like to introduce you to a new tangle pattern, which I called Sampa. Looks a little bit like Trimonds, but it’s different. Sampa is short for Sao Paulo.
It wasn’t until I’d done my example of Sampa that it dawned on me that it’s a variation of the Zentangle®-original tangle, Pinch. But Sampa looks so different especially when you rotate the tangle around to view it from different sides. Warping the underlying grid (aka wonky grid) also produces some interesting dynamics. Moving the apex point around in Step 2 can also change the look, reminding me of CZT Damy Teng’s 3D-Room.
Sampa is easy and fun to explore!
Dina illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Sampa below where she features it in a simple monotangle.
