How to draw DOUBLE DOUBLE

Zentangle pattern: Double Double. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. As Canadian CZT Margaret Bremner notes, the Urban Dictionary describes Double Double as:

A Canadian term used to describe how you take your coffee – two teaspoons of sugar and two creams. Preferably used in any Tim Hortons location.”

We visited Tim Hortons here on the site not so long ago … you might enjoy Zeppo with your Double Double.

Margaret’s Double Double is an easy grid-based tangle and as she points out “the gray tone is rather important“. It helps to visually push the meta-pattern of white rings forward and push the remaining rings back. Just be very sure your ink is completely dry before you blend the graphite into the background. Otherwise it’s smudge-city. And if you need to clean up a little graphite from the white shapes, the Tombow Mono Eraser is a handy little tool to have. (For more about it see 3-Loops-6.)

While Double Double is easy to tangle it requires a good bit of time. I found it helpful when doing the inner portion of each pointed oval (large rice shape) to place dots where I wanted the inner stroke to end, then I used the outer edge of the oval to guide the inner shape while aiming at the dot. (As opposed to simply trying to draw another smaller pointed oval within the outer one.)

In a little side excursion while I was digging around in my vocabulary memory bank for “pointed oval” I discovered, thanks to Wikipedia, that in geometry this shape is known as a symmetrical lens and/or a vesica piscis.

The Vesica piscis is the intersection of two disks with the same radius, with the center of each disk on the perimeter of the other.

Double Double shares DNA with CZT® Nathalie Marinoff’s Minouche, a tangle created on a dot grid.

Margaret illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Double Double here on her blog where she features it in two Zentangle® tiles, one with a regular grid and one with a curvy or wonky grid.

Double Double is Margaret’s 35th tangle on the site, Double Marasu was her most recent at 34. (Do we have a double theme going on here?)

Happy Monday exploring Double Double and have a beautiful week!

I already left this message on Margaret’s website, but I thought I’d leave it here too. I’ve been looking at Sacred Geometry for awhile and was just watching a couple of videos on YouTube about that today. Synchronicity? LOL But you really need to use a compass to do that well. But now you’ve shown a way to to do a version of it. I’m going to play with this and see what I can do with no tools but my micron. 😀 Thanks Margaret!

  • I also left a comment on Margaret’s website and will re-state here. I love it! Thank you Margaret!
